"TURNER AND TURNERS IN SCOTLAND" - Lecture by Eric Shanes
 

This talk will explore Turner's four visits to Scotland , as well as some of the many wonderful Turners in Scottish collections.

Eric Shanes is the Chairman of the Turner Society, and the author of eleven best-selling books and catalogues on Turner.

Cecilia Powell, the Editor of Turner Society News, first explored the subject of Turner and Italy in her prize-winning book Turner in the South: Rome , Naples , Florence (1987). In this Forum she will show slides of works by Turner and some of his contemporaries, providing a starting-point for general discussion among Society members.

"TRUANTING WITH TURNER"

 
Talk by Professor David Hill  
   

In this informal pre-Christmas talk, David Hill will reflect on three decades of puzzling out and tracing Turner's footsteps. Mulled wine and mince pies, for which there will be a charge of £2, will be served after the talk .

David Hill is Harewood Professor of Fine Art at the University of Leeds . He is the author of a number of books on Turner and his contemporaries, including In Turner's Footsteps, Turner in the Alps , Turner on theThames, Turner in the Northand Cotman in the North.

"TURNER AND CONSTABLE IN THE MELLON COLLECTION"

 

Lecture by Andrew Wilton

 
   

Many of the British pictures owned by the American collector Paul Mellon will be on show at the Royal Academy this autumn. Mellon loved both Turner and Constable, but in different ways. In this talk Andrew Wilton will examine these two great contemporaries, as well as Paul Mellon's responses to them.

Andrew Wilton was the founding Curator of Prints and Drawings at the British Art Center in New Haven , Connecticut (the Mellon Collection). He later became Keeper of the Historic British Collection at the Tate Gallery where he set up the Turner Collection in the Clore Gallery in 1987. Currently he is Visiting Research Fellow at Tate Britain .

"TURNER AND MUSIC REVISITED"  

Lecture by Ivan Moseley

 
   

In this talk Ivan Moseley will explore the music Turner may have heard, his reactions to it, and the relationship between music and the visual arts as it was perceived in Turner's day. Pieces of music directly or indirectly inspired by Turner's drawings and paintings will also be heard.

Ivan Moseley is the Secretary of the Turner Society, and a composer himself.

"TURNER AND THE LAW"  
Lecture by Nicholas Powell  
   

The law in Turner's day and its interaction with the artist's life, work, bequest and legacies will be examined by Nicholas Powell who practised as a solicitor in Westminster for forty years. He has been Treasurer of the Turner Society since 1987.

29TH ANNUAL KURT PANTZER MEMORIAL LECTURE:"THE INMOST SPIRIT OF LIGHT: SHELLEY AND TURNER"

 

Lecture by Professor Michael O'Neill

 
   

As Michael O'Neill will demonstrate, both Shelley and Turner were fascinated by light and were concerned with the apparent dissolution of form. Hewill also show that their Romantic vision celebrates possibility, while exploring the dark side of existence.

Michael O'Neill is Professor of English at Durham University and a Director of the University's Institute of Advanced Study . He has published extensively on Shelley, and on other Romantic and twentieth-century poets. Free wine will be served after the lecture.

"TURNER'S OIL SKETCHES FROM NATURE"  
Talk by Professor Sam Smiles  
   

Sam Smiles will examine oil sketches from different points in Turner's career and compare them with plein-air watercolour sketches in the Turner Bequest.

Sam Smiles is Professor of Art History at the University of Plymouth . He has published widely on Turner, especially the artist's activities in south-west England .

VISIT TO SANDYCOMBE LODGE

 
   

Sandycombe Lodge was the country villa that Turner designed and had built in 1813. It is owned by a member of the Turner Society. Due to pressure of space, the number of visitors at 11 a.m. will have to be limited to twelve; if demand is sufficient a second group-visit will take place at noon .

Lunch will be provided by Committee member Catherine Parry-Wingfield at a nearby house (£5.50with any profits going to the Sandycombe Lodge Trust).

TURNER IN SUSSEX

 

It is hoped that a coach trip will be organised to visit Brightling Park and church, Brightling Observatory, Bodiam Castle and Herstmonceux Castle and to see a private collection of Turner watercolours in East Sussex . Please note that the trip will be wholly dependent upon a sufficient number of members expressing an interest in attending. Details will appear in future issues of Turner Society News.

When requesting tickets for the Clore Study Room please state which time you would prefer(the Ticketing Secretary will try to respect your wishes but timings will be dependent on numbers attending). Tickets will be issued on a first come-first served basis up to a limit of 30 people.
