"TURNER IN SCOTLAND: THE 1801 TOUR" Talk by Andrew Wilton

Andrew Wilton will discuss the diverse scenery which Turner studied and sketched on his 1801 tour of Scotland, which took him from Edinburgh to Loch Lomond and up into the Highlands, including some landscapes that were deliberately Picturesque and others that were quite the opposite. The works to be displayed will also include some ambitious large watercolours, both finished and unfinished, that evolved from material gathered on this journey.

LONDON, PAUL MELLON CENTRE - Wednesday 22 April 2009, 6.30 p.m. (Entrance free, without ticket)

Paul Mellon Centre for British Art, 16 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3JA
30th Annual Kurt Pantzer Memorial Lecture - "TURNER IN THE 21ST CENTURY" Lecture by Professor Kathleen Nicholson

Professor Kathleen Nicholson will consider Turner as a historic cultural icon, with emphasis placed upon the artist's current appeal to an increasingly broad audience. Evidence of a "new" Turner ranges from the first retrospective prepared for American museums to his influence upon a new generation of artists including James Turrell, who uses light itself to achieve very Turnerian effects. How this current perception might distort Turner will also be taken into consideration.
Professor Nicholson has taught art history at the University of Oregon since 1980. Her writings include Turner's Classical Landscapes: Myth and Meaning (1990) and essays that include one on Claude's influence upon Turner, to appear in the catalogue of the forthcoming Turner and the Turner and the Masters exhibition at Tate Britain.

"DRAWINGS FOR THE LIBER STUDIORUM" Talk by Eric Shanes

Turner's Liber Studiorum, or "Book of Studies", was a set of mezzotint prints made between 1806 and 1819. In all, there were 100 original designs in sepia watercolour, although only 71 of them were engraved. The original drawings provide evidence of Turner's breathtaking powers as a draughtsman. In this talk, Eric Shanes will examine a number of those watercolours, as well as many of the prints subsequently engraved from them.
