The
National Gallery of Scotland holds 38 Turner Watercolours given
as part of the Henry Vaughan Bequest in 1900, one oil painting,
'Somer Hill, Tonbridge', and approximately 200 prints after Turner.
Please note that these watercolours are only on general public view
once a year every January!! However, they can be viewed on request
outside of January, but it should be noted that the terms of the
bequest are such that they can only be viewed once a day and so
once one group has viewed them, it is not possible for anyone else
to request to see them the same day ! So, if you wish to view them
outside of the January public viewing, it would be as well to make
an appointment so as to avoid disappointment. |

The
gallery houses the Turner Bequest - Turner's own gift that was bequeathed
to the nation. The bulk of the Turner collection is housed in the
Clore Gallery at Millbank, which was built specifically to house
the Turner Collection and was opened in 1987. In addition, individual
paintings by Turner are integrated in the main Tate gallery halls,
depending on what exhibitions are taking place. |
The
collection is far and away the largest of Turner's works in the
world, containing 38,000 works; 300 finished/unfinished oil paintings
and over 20,000 watercolours and drawings, many contained in the
300 sketchbooks held in the collection. |
For
a listing of the main Turner holdings at the Tate and to find out
which paintings are currently on show, visit the Tate's website
and use their online search facility. |
